Our hens are an important and much-loved part of the farm. We keep a small flock of Lohmann Brown Classic laying hens — a reliable, hardy breed known for producing beautiful brown eggs with rich golden yolks.
The hens enjoy a full acre of apple orchard to graze on. Rather than leaving them in one area, we rotate them carefully in 50-metre strips. This helps protect the ground, encourages even fertility distribution, and keeps the hens on fresh pasture.
Rotational grazing supports soil health, reduces parasite build-up, and allows the orchard floor to recover — working in harmony with our wider ecological approach to farming.
Our hens are free range and are fed a high-quality organic feed to ensure their health and wellbeing. We are now in our second year of organic conversion across the farm, and the hens are an important part of that journey toward a fully certified organic system.
Good welfare is central to how we farm. The hens have space to roam, scratch, dust bathe, and express their natural behaviours — which we believe results in happier birds and better eggs.
We currently produce around 210 eggs per week (approximately 7 trays of 30). These are available to purchase through our veg boxes, giving our community access to fresh, organic eggs laid just a short distance from home.
Like everything we produce, our eggs reflect our values: biodiversity, soil health, animal welfare, and nourishing local food systems.
They are a simple pleasure — and a small but meaningful part of building a resilient, community-rooted farm.
